Slope processes monitoring in key site Begovitsa, the Pirin Mountains,
Southwest Bulgaria

Begovitsa is a U-shaped relict glacial valley on the South-West slope of the highest part of the Pirin Mountains (above 1800 m a.s.l.) in the catchment of Sandanska Bistritsa River, left tributary in the Struma River’s drainage system. Geomorphological and sedimentological study is in progress in this site for denudative processes, lake and talus cones storage and fluvial transport since 2011.
In this current study we represent the results from slope processes dynamics within the period of our observations. The research covers weathering processes on rock outcrops, cracks measurement, products of wedging and soil formation; monitoring of creep and solifluxion and deposits related to their forms; slope erosion, river bed and terrace material characteristics within the Begovitsa catchment. Samples for grain-size analysis are collected from seven boreholes and three soil profiles. Four year period data is used to describe changes in the area. We used morphographic and sedimentological analyses (grain size and lithomineralogical analyses) and also field measurements.
The studied area characterize typical for Bulgaria high altitude cold environment in which geomorphologic processes are intensive due to temperature changes. This intensity is marked by changes in slope morphology and the velocity of creep and solifluxion. Fluvial deposits are informative about the depositional environment. Soil and peat bog profile data provides new information about past and recent fluctuations in climate and their impact on weathering, fluvial and slope processes. More data is required in order to understand the evolution of slope erosion and sediments redeposition in the high mountainous area.

Ecosystem/Landscape Services Provided by Umbrosols (UM) in Selected Mountainous Municipalities of Sofia District

ABSTRACT

The presented study aims to identify and quantify organic carbon as a supporting ecosystem/landscape service of Umbrosols (UM) in Stara Planina municipalities in the eastern part of Sofia district. For this purpose descriptions and sampling were performed along the ridge of Stara Planina falling in the territory of the municipalities of Gorna Malina, Mirkovo, Chelopech, Zlatitsa, Pirdop and Anton. Laboratory chemical and granulometric analyses of nine taken samples were carried out to establish the mechanical structure of the surface layer and the organic carbon content by a standard test method. The value of carbon per ton in mountain meadow soils, equated to the carbon emissions, is determined and presented as monetary value in EUR to indicate the value of “carbon stock” as a supporting ecosystem/landscape service of Umbrosols (UM). The results are comparable to other benchmark values and indicate that the relatively less studied Umbrosols (UM) have significant potential as a battery of organic carbon.

In the presented study of ecosystem/landscape goods and services in Rudozem and Banite municipalities, the contingent valuation method is applied by authors through a survey conducted among 121 respondents, respectively as follows: 56 respondents in Rudozem and 65 respondents in Banite. The results regarding the regulating, cultural and supporting ecosystem/landscape services for the region of Smolyan almost coincide in value with another similar study using the transfer method (Zervoudakis et al., 2007), carried out in all municipalities of the Rhodope Mountains. The regulating, cultural and supporting ecosystem services in the comparison study are defined at 5259 BGN/ha/year, a value which is very close to 5284 BGN/ha/year defined by the current study.

ABSTRACT The age of the sedimentary sequences of Hurd Peninsula (here referred to the Miers Bluff Formation (MBF)), has been considered so far as Triassic, coeval of the Trinity Group. Recently, a Tithonian ammonite species was found in a non-in situ block, coming from the lowermost unexposed part of the Formation. Our micropaleontological study reveals the occurrence of calcareous nannofossils in six sections. The recorded nannofossil association comprises the following species: Micula decussata, Calculites obscurus, Arkhangel-skiella cymbiformis, Prediscosphaera cretacea, Lucianorhabdus coyeuxii, Cyclagelosphaera reinhardtii, Braarudosphaera bigelowii, Ceratolithoides aculeus, Broinsonia cf. parca, Thoracosphaera sp. indet., Nephrolithus sp. indet., Cretorhabdus sp. indet., Watznaueria sp. indet. It determines a Campanian-Maastrichtian age for the middle and upper part of MBF. Two calcareous nanofossil species, Prediscosphaera cretacea and ?Fasciculithus sp. indet., found in the Burdick Peak section suggest a Late Maastrichtian to (?) Paleocene age of the uppermost part of the MBF. The sediments of the MBF are possibly coeval of a part of Marambio Group (James Ross Island and Seymour Island) and Williams Point beds (Livingston Island).
